Nigel,

someone on the Pie Mailing list has pointed out that there is nothing in the rules of the Trust that allows the Board to suspend new membership applications in this way. Would you please clarify?

The notice does say "temporarily suspended".
I hope to have more on this tomorrow.

Because of an unusual pattern of membership so far in March (compared with recent months), the Board had opted to temporarily suspend the processing of any new memberships whilst an investigation was carried out to ensure that there was nothing untoward.

We believe that it has in the circumstances been both reasonable and proportionate, and within the spirit of the rules, and of the Trust Board’s duty of care to the Trust as an organisation.

We have concluded our investigation and memberships will now be processed as normal.

We will continue to monitor the situation.

Would you please explain how it was "within the spirit of the rules" to suspend the processing of memberships when the rules do not allow you to suspend the processing of memberships?

The Trust Board has a duty of care to the organisation.

The assets held by the Trust could be very attractive to some.

I am sure that Trust members would crucify a Board that stood by and did nothing to verify that membership applications were what they said they were.

And who's protecting the Trust assets from within itself?

I am sure that Trust members would crucify a Board that stood by and did nothing full stop.
